The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel by C.F.W. Walther

The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel is awesome! I don't even know really what else to say about it. Walther just lays it all out. Understanding this distinction is crucial. "Without the Law the Gospel is not understood; without the Gospel the Law benefits us nothing." Unfortunately many people, many pastors, many church bodies, botch this up and lead people astray. As Walther says, "distinguishing the Law and Gospel is the most difficult and the highest art of Christians in general and of theologians in particular. It is taught only by the Holy Spirit in the school of experience." I read this first as an undergrad when I was studying to be a deaconess. I just recently completed an entire reread of it and was blown away again at how Walther explains everything.

Some passages from this book are included under the Theology label of this blog. Check it out!
