John 16:33

33"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

I love this passage because Jesus is so honest--we will have trouble. So many today try to say that a Christian can have this happy, problem free life if they have enough faith. But Jesus is straight in saying Christians do have trouble. We face trials and suffering and pain. We can expect that. But there is great comfort from Jesus here too. He has overcome the world. He has defeated the powers of evil in this world, and as believers in Christ, that victory is ours too. So that is why we can have peace as we live our daily lives in this troubled world. Though everything around us may be chaotic, scary, overwhelming, etc, we have peace in Christ.

This is actually my favorite passage in the New Testament. It was read at my ordination, and it is in this week's sermon.

I took a TON of comfort in this passage during my divorce year.
